Abrams wanted fans new to the franchise to be able to ask who is Luke Skywalker just like the new characters introduced in Star Wars 7 do. Abrams would only say that this was "no accident," fueling a wide array of speculation including the idea that Hamill's return could see him playing the villain of the new trilogy - an idea he had himself decades ago. Hey, while we're in the business of filling in the timeline with Disney+ shows, maybe give fans the Adventures of Wedge Antilles.Director and co-writer J.J. The dude probably would have snuffed out Snoke and the entire First Order the first time around. We don't know exactly what Wedge is up to during the events of Force Awakens and Last Jedi, but its hard to understand why General Organa didn't just get Wedge to lead their pilots the whole time. I mean, why even bother with Lando or Han Solo? The two dudes have weird, shady histories, and they're definitely not known for being reliable. But it feels like too little, too late for a character who probably should have been leading the Resistance all along. Wedge blew up the Second Death Star!įans were thrilled to see Antilles at the end of Rise of Skywalker. But whenever we hear anything about the franchise, Moranis never gets mentioned. Wedge gets little fanfare at all in the series. But it's Wedge who got the angsty kid there in the first place. Luke, of course, fires the missile that blows up the planet killer. The two would eventually buddy up to run the trench of the Death Star, with Wedge covering Luke's tail. As "Red Two," Antilles was tasked with training a young recruit named Luke Skywalker. The humble pilot, originally a defector of the Empire like Han Solo, rose through the ranks of the Republic to lead the feared X-Wing team, Red Squadron. While the main characters of the Original Trilogy were busy whining about the Skywalker family, laser swords, and spooky old men in robes, Wedge was shooting down TIE Fighters. Hell, if not for him, the Resistance wouldn't even exist. He trained Luke Skywalker on how to fly an X-Wing. And that's exactly what he's always done. ![]() But, while the new trilogy addressed the Where Are They Now of the beloved original main and auxiliary characters, Wedge Antilles didn't return until our heroes needed him the most. ![]() Both of those films saw the deaths of many of Star Wars's greatest characters. Portrayed by Denis Lawson, Wedge had been present in all the major original trilogy conflicts of the series until his mysterious absence from the Rebellion in Force Awakens and Last Jedi.
